Specify the grade and material condition
Identify the exact material designation and applicable standard. Grades such as 303, 304, 316L and 17-4 PH are not automatic substitutes: machining behavior, intended environment and material condition differ. For precipitation-hardening material, define the required heat-treatment condition and when dimensions are to be verified. If you require traceability or a material certificate, state the documentation requirement before sourcing rather than requesting it after shipment.

Review difficult features and finishing together
Long slender features, deep holes, small threads and tight positional tolerances can increase setup and inspection effort. Mark the dimensions that control assembly instead of applying the tightest tolerance everywhere. Specify deburring, edge breaks and any passivation, electropolishing or other treatment separately. Surface roughness should be attached to the relevant faces; a polished appearance is not itself a numerical roughness requirement.

Agree acceptance criteria for the application
Provide the drawing revision, mating features, quantity and operating environment where these affect the specification. For hygienic, pressure-containing or regulated applications, supply the actual standards and test criteria that apply to your part. We confirm the proposed process and documentation scope during quotation; the use of stainless steel alone does not establish medical, food-contact or pressure-equipment compliance. Packaging and protection of finished surfaces should also be included in the purchase requirements.
Questions before requesting a quote
Can 304 be replaced with 316L?
Only with your engineering approval. Define the required grade and service conditions, and review any proposed substitution before ordering.
Is passivation automatically included?
Do not assume it is included. State the required treatment and acceptance standard in the RFQ so it can be quoted and reviewed with machining and inspection.
